when do children begin communicating through words?
Children begin to use "mama" and "dada" and other meaningful single word approximations around 12 months of age. By 18 months, children have a vocabulary around 10 to 20 words. By the age of two, children have at least 50 words in their vocabulary and are communicating in two-word combinations. Speech sounds one and two year-olds use include m, p, b, t, d, h and n.

when should parents consult a speech-language pathologist?
Your child's speech and language skills should be screened and possibly evaluated if the following early milestones are not observed:
- by 12 months of age, your child should be pointing to objects you name, using gestures to indicate wants and needs, attempting to imitate sounds and words and responding to his or her name.
- by 18 months of age, your child should be following simple one-step directions and spoken single word vocabulary is growing.
- by 24 months of age, should have more than 50 words in their expressive vocabulary and is beginning to use two-word combinations.
If these skills are not emerging, you may want to consider a comprehensive speech and language evaluation.

- asks for needs to be met
- listens to stories with pictures
- attends to one activity for 6 to 7 minutes
